Course description

This course focuses on the advantages of using open standard protocols on contemporary networks. It teaches you how to migrate proprietary protocols to open standard protocols and then helps you develop migration strategies that reduce both risk and downtime. Once the network is running open standard protocols, you learn how to upgrade the edge and core.

Who should attend

Professionals who design, implement, and maintain network solutions based on HPE and Cisco technologies, including systems engineers, systems designers, customer IT staff, HPE services field and call center support engineers.

For specific prerequisites and requirements to achieve any of the related certifications, see the certification description on the Certification and Learning website.

  • Migrating the L2 switches in access and distribution layers
    • Manual or automatic setting of VLANs
    • Managing redundancy with or without STP
      - Per VLAN Spanning Tree Plus (PVST+) and MSTP
      - Static, LACP, and PAgP link-aggregation
      - Integrate IRF cluster into mixed environment
    • Transiting security features on the Edge
  • Migrating the L3 switches in Core
    • HSRP, VRRP and IRF
    • IGP transition: static routes, EIGRP, OSPF
    • BGP transition o ACL migration
    • IP Multicast transition
  • Managing Cisco and HPE devices in the same network with IMC
    • SNMP and traffic monitoring with Sflow and Netflow
    • AAA with RADIUS and TACACS

After completing this course, you should be able to do the following:
  • Assess a network
  • Identify the proprietary Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols being used.
  • Migrate the network to the open standards counterpart for each proprietary protocol.
  • Asses risk factors
  • Develop step by step migration strategies for networks while reducing potential downtime
  • Upgrade existing access layer, distribution, and core switches, based on the Layer 2 or Layer 3 protocols they support.
