Course description

This course teaches practical techniques for designing HPE NonStop™ SQL/MP databases. You learn how to map a logical design into a physical design, accommodating such physical performance considerations as partitioning, VARCHAR, SLACK, and disk caching. You will gain valuable practical experience with SQL database design. The course is 60 percent lecture and 40 percent hands on labs using HPE servers.

  • Onsite Delivery Equipment Requirements
    • One or two NonStop servers, CLX or above with the following:
      o 6 CPUs (2 minimum), 16 MB each
      o NonStop Kernel operating system, C30, D20, D30, or later for NonStop K-series servers, or any Gxx version for NonStop S-series servers
      o NonStop Transaction Monitoring Facility (TMF), NonStop SQL/MP
    • PC compatible workstation with the following:
      o Pentium class processor
      o 4 MB memory (including 640 KB conventional memory)
      o VGA monitor (minimum)
      o 11.5 MB disk space
      o Windows operating system
      o Access to the NonStop server for each student


After completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify advantages and disadvantages of implementing indexes and their performance implications

  • Understand the impact of disk cache and I/O performance
  • Describe the advantages and disadvatages for using the VARCHAR data type and SLACK parameter
